Hillside Angus Farm is located in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian and the Blue Ridge Mountains of north Georgia.  In our environment, the only grass that flourishes is fescue grass.  Due to our terrain and Georgia red clay soil, seasonal grasses are not an option.  Our cattle must be able to survive and excel in performance on fescue grass and purchased hay.  Our emphasis on developing our young cattle is on developing their rumen to have excellent capacity to graze plenty of grass and natural organic matter.

Therefore, along with whatever is in the pasture at weaning, we feed all our males and females a very high crude fiber (17%) feed to develop and expand their rumen.  This feed also contains 12% protein and is 40% corn based to grow the bone and flesh at a rate of about 1 1/2 lbs. gain per day for the heifers and 2-3lb. gain per day for the bulls.  Since our heifers are bred to have their first calf as a 2 year old (22 – 26 months) and the bulls are sold to breed at 14 – 18 months old, they must be able to maintain themselves and continue to grow into mature Brood Stock under our environmental conditions.
